Zolitūde, in western Riga, takes its name from the French word for "solitude." It was planned as a centrally designed estate of prefabricated concrete, Brutalist-style housing, with construction starting in 1984 and mostly halting in 1991 at independence — today around 20,000 residents live here in an area of less than 3 km².
